There’s a lot of truth in the old catch-phrase ‘You can’t beat Wellington on a good day’. At lunchtime I shot out for a short ride around some of the bays east of the CBD. Within two minutes the central city was behind me and the harbour was looking as brilliant a blue as ever I’ve seen. Summery weather drew the masses out to the shared path around Oriental Bay, but the treat of the day lay further out.

When a van suddenly turned across our path entering the Evans Bay Marina, brakes were well tested, voices raised, and levels of paranoia elevated. A couple of minutes down the road, a guy started to yell at us out of his car window. It took a second or two for our furrowed brows to give way to a smile as we realised he was shouting ‘Dolphins! Dolphins in the bay!’.

Sure enough, there was a pod of our slippery mammalian friends jumping and circling in Evans Bay. What a great day for a spot of fishing, or a ride, walk or run! It’s encouraging to think that this is just the start of summer – the start of many beautiful days.

If you’d like to give the road ride around the bays a go, but are concerned about the traffic, Bike the Bays may be just event for you. It’s the same lovely ride, as free as ever, but with marshals, lots of company and entertainment waiting at the finish. This Sunday morning, the 13th December. Register here. I’ll see you there.
